Upgrade and physics perspective of ALICE at the LHC
ALICE at the LHC, collecting data in Pb-Pb, p-Pb and pp collisions, aims for the characterisation of the strongly interacting matter at unprecedented energy densities. While the first running period until 2018 can provide detailed description of the global and bulk phenomena and a first set of intriguing results on rare probes of heavy-ion collisions, many important questions involving rare pro...
متن کاملHigh Level Trigger System for the LHC ALICE Experiment
The central detectors of the ALICE experiment at LHC will produce a data size of up to 75 MB=event at an event rate p200 Hz resulting in a data rate of B15 GB=s: Online processing of the data is necessary in order to select interesting (sub)events (‘‘High Level Trigger’’), or to compress data efficiently by modeling techniques. Processing this data requires a massive parallel computing system (...
متن کاملHeavy Ion Physics with the Alice Experiment at Lhc
Besides its proton-proton (pp) physics program, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, which is going to start operating in early 2008, will deliver lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy √ sNN = 5.5 TeV, opening the door to unexplored regimes in heavy-ion particle physics from several points of view, such as the centre-of-mass energy, the energy density reached, the lifetime and th...
متن کاملScenarios for the LHC Upgrade
The projected lifetime of the LHC low-beta quadrupoles, the evolution of the statistical error halving time, and the physics potential all call for an LHC luminosity upgrade by the middle of the coming decade. In the framework of the CARE-HHH network three principal scenarios have been developed for increasing the LHC peak luminosity by more than a factor of 10, to values above 10 cm−2s−1. All ...
متن کاملThe ALICE Inner Tracking System Upgrade
A central component of the ALICE Upgrade will be a completely new Inner Tracking System (ITS). The performance of the new ITS will be a significant improvement over that of the present ITS, in particular in the areas of material budget, granularity, a reduced radial distance from the first layer to the beam and rate capability. This will enable many key measurements of the properties of the qua...
